A jjimjilbang is a bathhouse with the rest of a building attached: hot pools and cold plunges downstairs, then a floor of kilns, snack bars, sleeping halls and televisions upstairs. They are open twenty-four hours, they cost about the same as two coffees, and they are the single most Korean thing you can do indoors.

What to expect the first time
- Roughly ₩10,000–15,000
- A jjimjilbang for the day, towel and cotton uniform included. A plain bathhouse is more like ₩6,000–9,000. Staying overnight usually adds a few thousand won.
- Open all night
- A proper jjimjilbang does not close. People sleep on the heated floor of the shared hall, which is why they have been the cheapest bed in Korea for decades.
- Naked downstairs, dressed upstairs
- The bathing floor is single-sex and nobody wears anything. The shared sauna floor is mixed and everyone wears the uniform you are handed on the way in.
- Wash before you get in
- Sit at a shower stool and wash thoroughly first. This is the one rule nobody will let slide, and it is the only one worth being nervous about.
