Sobaeksan
소백산국립공원
Open grassy ridges at 1,400m, and royal azaleas at the end of May.
Sobaeksan's summit ridge is unusually bare and rolling for a Korean mountain, which makes for long views and a very exposed walk in wind. Birobong tops out at 1,440m.
Late May brings the royal azaleas out across the upper slopes; in winter the same open ground is one of the coldest, windiest places in the country.

Getting there from Seoul
Door-to-door estimates for a normal day; they stretch on a holiday weekend. Check the timetable before you rely on a last bus back.
Train
Train to Danyang on the Jungang line, about 2h 30m, then a local bus to the Darian or Cheondong trailheads. Danyang itself is worth a night.
Bus
Express coach to Danyang or Punggi, around 2h 30m.
Car
About two and a half hours. The park straddles a provincial border, so check which side your trailhead is on.
Wildlife & plants
Animals
The site of Korea's Asiatic black bear monitoring in the north, plus goral, marten and flying squirrel. The open ridge is good for raptors.
Trees & flowers
Royal azalea across the summit ridge in late May is the park's signature. Near the top, a natural stand of Korean yew several hundred years old, and subalpine grassland kept open by the wind.
Korea’s wildlife is shy and mostly nocturnal — you’re far more likely to see tracks than animals. Wild boar are the one to know about: keep your distance, don’t run, and never get between a sow and her young.
