Wonju is Gangwon Province's largest city, a mountain-ringed hub about 140 km east of Seoul that also serves as the main gateway to Chiaksan National Park.
History
Wonju served as the provincial capital of Gangwon during the Joseon dynasty, and that administrative role carried into the modern era — it remains the province's most populous city today. The Korean War hit the city hard: it changed hands repeatedly and was the site of major fighting in early 1951 as UN forces pushed back the Chinese offensive. In the postwar decades Wonju rebuilt around its role as a military garrison town and provincial hub, and more recently has grown into a center for medical device manufacturing and, with Museum SAN, an unlikely stop on Korea's contemporary art circuit.

Getting there
Wonju Station has run trains since 1940 and today sits on the Jungang Line, with direct service from Seoul's Cheongnyangni Station taking roughly an hour to 90 minutes depending on the train. A separate KTX-Eum line through Seowonju Station also connects Wonju toward Gangneung on the east coast. Express buses run from several Seoul terminals as well.
How long
Wonju rewards a full day at minimum — Museum SAN alone is worth several hours, and Chiaksan's trails are a separate outing — so it works well either as a long day trip from Seoul or an overnight if you want to combine the museum, the mountain, and the rail park without rushing.
