Yeosu여수

A south-coast city built for its own famous song — Yeosu Night Sea — with a cable car over the water and some of Korea's best seafood.

Population

About 280,000.

Fun fact

Yeosu's 'night sea' is famous enough in Korea to have its own hit song.

Yeosu on the map

Yeosu is a night-view city: its "night sea" is well-known enough in Korea to have its own hit song, and most of what's worth seeing is designed to be seen after dark.

Highlights

  • The Yeosu maritime cable car, Korea's first over-water cable car — a 1.5 km ride with glass-floored cabins over the harbour, best timed around sunset.
  • Dolsan Park, the best viewpoint over the illuminated Dolsan Bridge and harbour at night.
  • Odongdo Island, a small camellia-covered island connected to the mainland by a short causeway, walkable from the Expo waterfront.
  • Fresh seafood along the harbour — Yeosu is considered one of Korea's better seafood cities.

Getting there

KTX from Seoul's Yongsan Station to Yeosu-Expo Station takes about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours. The station sits right next to the Expo site and waterfront, making it one of the more conveniently located KTX stations in the country.

How long

The main sights — cable car, Dolsan Park, Odongdo, the Expo waterfront — are walkable to each other and fit comfortably into a full day, though staying the night is worth it to actually see the "night sea" the city is named for.
