Taean-gun is best known for its stunning coastline, Taeanhaean National Park, and vibrant seasonal flower festivals — a rural county on Korea's west coast built almost entirely around its shoreline.
History
Taean's modern identity is inseparable from the sea. The Korean government designated Taeanhaean National Park in 1978, protecting a stretch of coastline known for its tidal flats, sand dunes, and rock formations — Korea's only coastal-type national park. In December 2007, the county was the site of the Hebei Spirit oil spill, one of Korea's worst environmental disasters, after a crane barge struck a moored tanker off the coast; the cleanup drew well over a million volunteers from across the country, and the coastline has since recovered enough to remain one of Korea's most popular beach destinations.

- Taeanhaean National Park, stretching along roughly 198km of coastline with around 130 islands, tidal flats, sand dunes and sea cliffs — trails are graded from wheelchair-accessible boardwalks to multi-hour hikes over rocky terrain.

Food
As a fishing county, Taean's food centers on what comes off its own boats — blue crab (kkotge) and squid are local specialties, alongside the seafood stews and grilled shellfish served at restaurants near the main beaches.
Annual events
- Taean World Tulip Festival (roughly early April to early May) — one of Korea's largest tulip festivals, held at Korea Flower Park (Kkotji Ocean Park), with several hundred tulip varieties across the grounds.
Getting there
Direct buses run from Seoul's Central City Terminal to Taean's bus terminal — this rural county has no train station of its own, so bus is the standard way in.
How long
The beaches and national park trails are spread along the coast rather than clustered together, so Taean rewards at least one night — a day trip is possible but rushed if you want to see more than one beach.
