Suwon is close enough to Seoul to feel like an extension of the subway map, but it centres on something Seoul doesn't have: Hwaseong Fortress, a complete 18th-century city wall you can walk.
Highlights
- Hwaseong Fortress, built 1794–1796 under King Jeongjo — a 5.7 km wall circuit passing four main gates, watchtowers, and command posts. The full loop takes 2–3 hours on foot.
- Haenggung Palace, a detached royal palace inside the fortress walls that once housed the royal family during visits.
- Paldalmun, the fortress's south gate and a short walk from Suwon Station.
- Starfield Library, inside Starfield Suwon mall, one subway stop from Suwon Station at Hwaseo Station — a striking multi-storey library open to the public.
Getting there
Subway Line 1 runs directly from central Seoul to Suwon Station (about an hour, all-stop). A KTX or ITX train from Seoul Station cuts this to 20–30 minutes. From Suwon Station, Paldalmun (the fortress's south gate) is a 10-minute walk.
How long
The fortress and Haenggung Palace fill a comfortable half-day, which is why Suwon works well as a half-day add-on to a Seoul trip rather than needing its own overnight stay.
