Pyeongchang is Korea's winter-sports centre, home to the resorts that hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics, and high enough in the mountains to stay cool in summer too.
Highlights
- Yongpyong Resort, Korea's largest ski resort — 31 slopes and 15 lifts, including a 3.7 km gondola. Season runs November to early April.
- Alpensia Resort, the main 2018 Winter Olympics venue, and Phoenix Pyeongchang, known for a younger, park-oriented ski crowd.
- Odaesan National Park and Birobong (1,563m), for hiking outside ski season.
Getting there
The KTX Gyeonggang Line runs from Seoul Station to Jinbu Station (about 1.5–1.75 hours), the closest stop to Yongpyong — the resort runs a free shuttle bus from the station a couple of times a day.
When to go
Winter for skiing, obviously, but the same mountains make for a cool, quiet summer escape from Seoul's heat.
