Paju sits on the Imjin River just south of the Demilitarized Zone, a Gyeonggi city whose identity is shaped by its position on the front line of Korea's division alongside a very different reputation as a hub for art, books, and design.
History
Paju was a rural county for most of its history before being elevated to city status in 1997 as Seoul's northward growth reached it. Its location just south of Panmunjeom and the 38th parallel has made it strategically important since the Korean War, and it still hosts a significant military presence defending the approach to Seoul. That same border-zone geography later shaped an unusual second identity: in the late 1990s the government-backed publishing complex Paju Book City and the artist-led Heyri Art Valley were both planned nearby, turning a military border town into a center for Korean publishing and contemporary art and design.
Highlights
- Imjingak Park, built in 1972 on the banks of the Imjin River as a memorial space for families separated by the division, home to the Freedom Bridge and the bullet-scarred "Peace Train" locomotive.
- Dorasan Station, opened in 2002 as the northernmost stop on South Korea's rail network, built in hope of a future reconnection to the North.
- Heyri Art Valley, Korea's largest planned artist community, developed from 1998 with around 380 resident artists and architect-designed galleries, museums, and cafes.
- Paju Book City, a purpose-built publishing district that has grown into a destination of bookstores, design studios, and cafes.
- Odusan Unification Observatory, perched where the Imjin and Han rivers meet, offering views directly across into North Korean territory.
Food
Paju is known for Jangdan sitae kong, a soybean variety grown around the former village of Jangdan near the border; the beans are prized for their flavor and are used locally in doenjang (soybean paste) and other traditional dishes.
Getting there
Paju is reached from Seoul via the Gyeongui-Jungang commuter line or express buses, both typically under an hour, and the GTX-A express rail line has extended faster service into the area. Munsan Bus Terminal in Paju is also the departure point for many organized DMZ and Imjingak tours.
How long
Paju works well as a day trip from Seoul — Imjingak and the DMZ-area sites, or Heyri and Book City, can each be covered in a few hours — though seeing both the border sights and the art valley in one day makes for a long day.
