Muju sits in the mountainous inland heart of North Jeolla, wrapped around Deogyusan National Park, and is built almost entirely around its surrounding peaks and valleys.
History
The name Muju combines two older districts, Mupung and Jugye, merged into one administrative area in 1414. Long before that, during the Three Kingdoms period, the region sat on the border between Silla and Baekje territory, and its mountainous terrain has kept it a rural, sparsely populated county ever since — today it's built its identity around outdoor tourism rather than industry.
Highlights
- Deogyusan National Park, centered on Hyangjeokbong Peak (1,614m), with the Gucheon-dong Valley's 33 named scenic spots along a stream popular for summer wading.
- Muju Deogyusan Resort, one of Korea's major ski resorts, home to the "Silk Road" slope — at 6.1km, the longest in the country.
- Jeoksangsanseong Fortress, a Goryeo-era mountain fortress on Mt. Jeoksang with a historic temple, Anguksa, inside its walls.
- National Taekwondo Promotion Center, a large park and training facility dedicated to Korea's national martial art.
- Namdae Stream and Jinan Park, the main viewing areas for Muju's wild fireflies each late summer.
Food
Muju is known for rainbow trout sashimi (songeo hoe), raised in local mountain-stream aquaculture farms and usually served as a set with a spicy stew made from the trout's leftover parts. Restaurants built around mountain vegetables and doenjang-based stews are also common, drawing on wild greens gathered from the surrounding slopes.
Annual events
- Muju Firefly Festival (late August–early September) — a government-designated cultural tourism festival, running since the late 1990s, centered on Muju's wild firefly population and built around nighttime viewing programs, ecological exhibits, and performances at Jinam Park and Namdae Stream.
Getting there
Direct buses run from Seoul's Nambu Bus Terminal to Muju, taking about 2.5 hours with several departures a day. There's no direct train; the closest station is Yeongdong, about 40 minutes from central Muju by local bus.
How long
An overnight makes more sense than a day trip — the ski resort, the national park trails, and firefly viewing (which only happens after dark) are all spread across the county and worth more than a few rushed hours.
