Jeolla

Mokpo목포

A port city at Korea's southwestern tip — a free clifftop skywalk, a cable car over the harbour, and a well-preserved Japanese-colonial-era old town.

Population

About 220,000.

Fun fact

Mokpo's old town has one of Korea's best-preserved collections of early-1900s Japanese colonial-era buildings.

Mokpo on the map

Mokpo sits at the end of the KTX line in the southwest, a working port city with an old town of early-1900s buildings and some of the best free views in the country.

Highlights

  • Mokpo Skywalk, a free clifftop platform with an unobstructed view of Mokpo Bridge, reached by bus #01 from Mokpo Station.
  • Mokpo Marine Cable Car, running 155 m above the water across the harbour to Gohado Island and the Yudalsan hillside.
  • Sihwa Alley, an old-town street of preserved early-20th-century buildings, popular as a filming location.
  • Mokpo's harbour seafood, especially hongeo (fermented skate) if you're feeling adventurous.

Getting there

KTX from Seoul Station (or Yongsan, with more departure options) to Mokpo takes about 2.5 hours, with around 7 trains a day. An early departure (around 6:30–7:40am) gives a full day in the city.

How long

Mokpo works well as a long day trip from Seoul thanks to the direct KTX, or as the last stop on a loop through Jeolla's southwest before heading back north.
