Miryang is a South Gyeongsang city on the old Great Yeongnam Road between Seoul and Busan, a position that shaped both its history and its most famous landmark: the cliffside Yeongnamnu Pavilion. It's also the namesake of one of Korea's best-known folk songs, Miryang Arirang.
History
Miryang's recorded history stretches back to the Samhan period, when the area was known as Mirimidongguk, before it was annexed by the Silla kingdom in 505 CE. Its strategic location on the road connecting the capital to the southeastern coast made it an important waypoint for officials and travelers for centuries — a role embodied by Yeongnamnu, whose original structure was likely built during the Silla period as part of the now-vanished Yeongnamsa temple, and was rebuilt in its current form in 1884.

Food
Miryang's agricultural specialties include locally grown jujubes (dried dates), apples from the Eoreumgol (Ice Valley) region — where more than 1,270 farms produce over 16,700 tons annually — and Mattana, a distinctive local chili pepper variety.

- Miryang Arirang Festival, held every May to preserve and promote Miryang Arirang, a folk song tied to the local legend of Arang.
Getting there
Miryang Station sits directly on the Gyeongbu Line between Seoul and Busan and is currently the only KTX stop between Daegu and Busan, making it an easy add-on for travelers moving along that corridor. The city is also served by Samnangjin, Sangdong, and Nakdonggang stations on connecting lines.
How long
Miryang's main sights — Yeongnamnu, Eoreumgol, and Pyochungsa — are spread across the city and surrounding mountains, so while Yeongnamnu alone suits a quick stop en route between Daegu and Busan, seeing the valley and temple as well is more comfortable as a full day trip.
