Jindo is Korea's third-largest island, linked to the mainland by two bridges over the fast-flowing Myeongnyang Strait — and the namesake of the country's most famous native dog breed.
History
The Myeongnyang Strait between Jindo and Haenam was the site of Admiral Yi Sun-sin's most lopsided naval victory: in 1597, with only 13 ships against a much larger Japanese fleet, he used the strait's powerful currents to help rout the invaders. Centuries earlier, in 1270–71, the Sambyeolcho — an elite Goryeo military unit resisting the Mongol-Goryeo alliance — made their base on Jindo after fleeing Ganghwa Island, holding out until a combined Mongol-Goryeo force overran the island and the survivors fled on to Jeju.
Highlights
- The Miracle Sea Road, a roughly 2.8-kilometer land bridge that emerges between Jindo and neighboring Modo island during extreme low tides, about twice a year. The phenomenon was little known outside Korea until French ambassador Pierre Randi wrote about it in the French press in 1975, after which it became known internationally as a real-life "Moses miracle."
- Jindo Dog Theme Park, dedicated to the Jindo dog, designated Natural Monument No. 53 in 1962 for its purebred lineage, loyalty, and strong homing instinct.
- Cheomchalsan, the island's highest peak at 485 meters, with hiking trails and coastal views.
- Jindo Bridge, the twin-span bridge over Myeongnyang Strait connecting the island to Haenam on the mainland.
Food
Local specialties include gugija (wolfberry), used for liquor, tea, and paste; cheongju, a red-colored traditional rice wine; brown seaweed; and heugmi, a black rice grown on the island.
Annual events
- Jindo Sea-Parting Festival (spring, timed to the lowest tides, usually March–June) — traditional performances, Ganggangsullae circle dances, and Jindo dog shows held around the Miracle Sea Road event; the 2026 festival runs April 17–20.
Getting there
Express buses run about 4–5 times daily from Seoul's Central City Terminal, taking roughly 4.5 to 5 hours. It's often faster to take a KTX to Mokpo and then a local bus onward, about 1.5–2 hours more.
How long
Time a visit to the tidal event if you can — it only happens on a handful of days a year — and plan an overnight, since festival crowds and tide timing rarely line up with a same-day return.
