Jeongeup is a mid-sized city in North Jeolla Province whose fame rests largely on what lies just outside it: Naejangsan National Park, one of the most photographed autumn-foliage destinations in Korea. The city itself also carries deep historical weight as the birthplace of the 1894 Donghak Peasant Revolution.
History
Historically known as Gobu, the area was the flashpoint for the Donghak Peasant Revolution, one of the pivotal uprisings in modern Korean history. In January 1894, peasants angered by the oppressive rule of local magistrate Jo Byeong-gap stormed the government office in Gobu, and by April the rebels won a major early victory at the Battle of Hwangtojae nearby. The city also preserves older heritage: a traditional Confucian hyanggyo school and Naejangsa Temple, first built in 636, though most of its current structures date from after the devastation of the 1592–98 Japanese invasions and the Korean War (the temple suffered another fire in 2012). Jeongeup is also the origin of Jeongeup-ga, a surviving folk song dated to the Baekje kingdom.

Getting there
Jeongeup Station sits on both the conventional Honam Line and the Honam high-speed rail line, so it's a direct KTX stop between Seoul (Yongsan) and Mokpo/Gwangju-Songjeong — typically under two hours from Seoul. The city is also on the Honam Expressway, making it an easy stop for drivers heading toward Gwangju.
How long
Most visitors treat Jeongeup as a day trip built around Naejangsan, particularly during peak autumn foliage (typically late October to early November) when the park can get very crowded. An overnight stay is worth considering only if pairing the park with the city's historical sites or arriving specifically to beat the day-trip crowds.
