Daejeon is a major science and technology city in central South Korea, a KTX hub built around a dense cluster of national research institutes and universities.
History
Daejeon's native name, Hanbat, means "great field," reflecting its origins as a rural farming area through the Three Kingdoms, Goryeo, and Joseon periods, when it was a minor settlement rather than a major town. Its transformation began with the Gyeongbu railway line, which reached the area in 1904; the new Daejeon Station drew migrants and merchants, and the settlement grew rapidly around the rail junction. Japan's colonial administration merged surrounding counties into Daejeon in 1914, and after the Korean War the city kept expanding as a transportation and administrative center, reaching Metropolitan City status in 1989. From the 1970s the government began developing what is now Daedeok Innopolis as a hub for national research institutes, and in 1997 several national government agencies relocated to a new Government Complex in the city. Daejeon's 1993 Expo further cemented its identity as Korea's science and technology city.

Getting there
Daejeon is one of Korea's best-connected cities: KTX high-speed trains reach Daejeon Station from Seoul in about 50 minutes, and Seodaejeon and Daejeon Complex bus terminals both run frequent intercity buses to Seoul and beyond.
How long
As a major city with sights spread across a wide urban area, Daejeon works well as a day trip from Seoul thanks to the fast KTX connection, though an overnight lets you add Yuseong Hot Springs or a fuller look at the Daedeok research district without rushing.
